There are chapters on human evolution, to be sure, but the lengthiest writings have to do with sexual selection in non-human species (there are three or four chapters on birds alone). But also how we need good male role models in the public eye like (his examples, but ones I'm on board with) Barack Obama, David Beckham, Chris Packham, David Attenborough and David Bowie. I really enjoyed his annotated cartoons, I would love to see a whole book like this, I think that would have been much more successful. Darwin is much more verbose in this book than he was in the very readable Voyage of the Beagle. Those with eyes to see, see the world explained. They are quite…wildly spectacular and suggestive…of a world where sexuality is a choice.Until a friend recently pointed him out, I’d never heard of Grayson Perry. And some people fall in love with books about falling in love. Welcome back. Not perfect but worth it.It takes a bit of nerve to use the same title for your book as Charles Darwin did for his 1871 study, but in a way Grayson Perry seems to be saying that modern men are fully capable of evolving, and for the better. Sadly I don't think so. We all have our reading bucket lists. Some people fall in love. I read Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species over a decade ago, but for many different reasons didn't quite get around the following it up with the descent. It is amazing how brilliant Charles Darwin was in noticing and studying evolution completely apart from the limitations of his time, discovering what was at first a theory and today is an absolute truth. It is amazing how brilliant Charles Darwin was in noticing and studying evolution completely apart from the limitations of his time, discovering what was at first a theory and today is an absolute truth.Going into this work, I was under the impression that it mainly focused on human evolution. Darwin had said almost nothing about human beings in the Origin, except a single sentence:

Thank goodness someone got use out of his library. I have since looked at his artwork online and am as impressed over his painting and his clothing choices as anyone would be. It’s also a fairly short audiobook so I didn’t get bored even though nearly all the chapters talk about very similar things leading back to the same points. Do we still need a man to be abReally thoughtful and thought provoking book about what it is to be a man and what our current predominant model of manhood means not only for men but also for all of us. A vulnerable man is not some weird anomaly. While feminism is much discussed, masculinity is not. Also, I think I'd like to read the non-concise version. While feminism is much discussed, masculinity is not. Do we still need a man to be able to domineer others, ruthlessly walk over other people's opinion, use brute strength to earn a living or build something, or do we need a man who knows how to find a affordable flat to rent, be a real partner in bringing up children, and a dad who knows how to teach children, but especially sons, how to avoid conflict or solve them without violence or putting the other down? I suspect many will love it, as they did the Channel 4 shows on a similar theme which I never quite got around to watching; meanwhile, the usual suspects will be as outraged as ever when Perry points out the emperor is naked and not half so 'aGrayson Perry is a bit like Marmite or Mansun; I quite like him, while getting the feeling that most other people who like him like him much more than I do.

He claimed that the human animal is closest in ancestry to the two African "pongids," or anthropoid apes (chimpanzees and gorillas). The fact that evolution occurs became accepted by the scientific community and the general public in his lifetime, while his theory of natural selection came to be widely seen as the primary explanation of the process of evolution in the 1930s, and now forms the basis of modern evolutionary theory. I liked how Grayson Perry brought in his experiences and hang-ups and vulnerabilities as he discussed masculinity. An essential, accessible read that everyone should have on their bookshelves. Grayson Perry defines masculinity as "a construct of conditioned feelings around people with penises." Overall the ideas in the book were perhaps too polarised, black and white and neatly tied up to be interesting to someone who generally agrees with them. Well what can I say, other than I was easily distracted by easier books to read. What can I say about Darwin and his contemporaries?

I first read this in my Uncles house in the sixties. It's interesting to compare what he wrote about then with what his successor theorists write about today. This book reveals just how much Darwin's racist and sexist views influenced his scientismic method. This is one of the few books I found no redeeming qualities in. Thus the weak members of civilised societies propagate their kind.

Grayson shows how so many problems we currently have, are directly correlated to the still predominant idea of manhood, which values, brute strength, dominance, power, rivalry and success more than understanding ones own and other people's feelings, being able to negotiate positions and teamwork. 0241236274 "I smelt a basic feeling looking for a rationale... and then came up with a semi-plausible motive""I smelt a basic feeling looking for a rationale... and then came up with a semi-plausible motive"This is the best thing I have read this year so far.
